Rockland Sailing School and Apprenticeshop - Solution 1

CS Apprenticeshop1.jpg

Currently, the state of the site offers little in the way connections to the Apprenticeshop, library or to the views of the ocean just behind the current buildings. The administration building is almost right on the street with a narrow side walk. This structure does not communicate what it does or why it is special, and it offered no line of sight connections to the wonderful view of the ocean behind it. The other issue was the steep grade of the site that dropped about 25 feet to the parking lot below.

To solve these issues we proposed to place the new administration and library further in from the street to allow foot traffic more room to take notice of the new structure. Because lines of sight are so important, the building will be open all the way through so that views of the ocean can be seen. The structure will be tiered to accommodate the extreme grade of the site. This will allow guests better visual connections to the site and surrounding areas.
